Barkisland, Halifax

Barkisland is a picturesque Pennine village southwest of Halifax, set among rolling hills, stone-built cottages, historic farmhouses and winding country lanes. Although small in size, it has a remarkably rich history, with its roots stretching back to the medieval period. The place name was recorded as “Barkesland” in 1246, making it a settlement with a documented history spanning more than seven centuries.

The village is particularly well known for its historic stone houses and halls, built by prosperous local families whose wealth often came from farming and the woollen textile trade. One of its most impressive landmarks is Barkisland Hall, built in 1638, while nearby Howroyde Hall dates from 1642. These substantial homes reflect the importance of the local cloth industry and the fortunes made by families who combined farming with textile production.

Barkisland’s industrial story can also be seen at Bowers Mill, where textile manufacturing continued for generations, and in the old cottages, mills and quarries scattered across the surrounding countryside. St Mary’s Church, the village school and the traditional village stocks add further layers to its history. Today, Barkisland retains much of its rural character, offering a glimpse of the historic Pennine communities that grew alongside Halifax’s expanding textile industry.
