Near Holme Place, Hebden Bridge
This view looks towards Holme Place from near the centre of Hebden Bridge. At the time the photograph was taken, a major clearance scheme was under way in the area. A considerable amount of older property was being removed to allow for a long-awaited road-widening project stretching from the lower end of Commercial Street to White Lion Corner.
White Lion Corner was described as one of the most dangerous sections of the town's main road, and the improvements were intended to address this long-standing problem.
Visible in the background is part of St John's Church, together with a section of Stubbings Council School. The scene would have been familiar to many visitors to Hebden Bridge, as the buildings stood alongside the road leading towards Hardcastle Crags.
