Hove Edge, Brighouse — Quarry Cottages, Old Inns and a Changing Pennine Hamlet

Hove Edge sits on the higher ground north of Brighouse, in an area that was once part of the wider township of Hipperholme. Before Brighouse became the principal industrial town nearby, Hipperholme and its surrounding districts formed an important local centre. Hove Edge developed as a smaller settlement of farms, cottages and working sites, with its character shaped by the stone beneath its fields and the roads connecting it with Halifax and Brighouse.

Stone quarrying was an important part of Hove Edge’s history. Historic maps identify Hove Edge Delph and Clog Sole Delph, small sandstone quarries that cut into the sloping ground. Hove Edge Delph was shown as disused on the 1893 map but had reopened by 1907. Later maps record further mining activity, changes to the quarry landscape and tipping during the 20th century. These workings altered the ground significantly, leaving traces of the industrial activity that once took place beyond the main roads.

The old roadside buildings also tell a story of travel and local trade. Historic cottages along Halifax Road include Yew House, now divided into three dwellings, whose earlier form appears on 19th-century maps. Former pubs such as the Joiners Arms served the community and travellers on the road; the Joiners Arms closed in 1932, though the building survives. Hove Edge also developed its own civic and social institutions, with Conservative and Liberal clubs opening new premises in 1909.

Today, Hove Edge is largely suburban, linked closely with Brighouse. Yet its old stone houses, former inns and altered quarry sites preserve evidence of a settlement that grew from a rural township into a community shaped by quarrying, road traffic and the outward spread of the town.
