The Acapulco — Halifax's Legendary Nightclub

If you grew up in Halifax any time from the 1960s onwards, chances are you've got an Acapulco story. The sweat on the walls, the bass through the floor, the queue down Waterhouse Street in the freezing cold — and of course, that carpet.

The Acapulco isn't just a nightclub. It's a rite of passage.

A Brief History

The Acapulco opened its doors in 1962 above the Broadway Supermarket on Waterhouse Street — and remarkably, it has never changed its name. That makes it the UK's oldest continuously running nightclub still trading under its original name.

For over sixty years, generations of Halifax's young (and not-so-young) have climbed those stairs for a night out they'd never quite forget — or sometimes, never quite remember.

The club was originally owned and operated by the Turczak family, who ran it for decades and built its reputation as the go-to venue in town. Under their stewardship, the Acapulco became more than just a nightclub — it became part of Halifax's identity.

Over the years, the stage has welcomed a string of live performers and stars, making the Acapulco not just a dance floor but a proper entertainment venue. If those walls could talk, they'd need a week.

The Sticky Carpet

No article about the Acapulco would be complete without mentioning the carpet.

It became the stuff of legend — a floor so sticky from decades of spilled drinks that your shoes made a sound like velcro with every step. It wasn't a flaw. It was a feature. It was the Acapulco experience.

When the club underwent a major renovation in 2022, the famous carpet was finally pulled up — but not thrown away. Pieces of it were sold off for charity, giving loyal regulars the chance to own a little square of Halifax nightlife history. You couldn't make it up.

The Acapulco Today

The club is now owned by Simon Jackson, who has invested in modernising the venue while keeping its spirit alive. The renovation brought a fresh look, but the Acapulco remains what it's always been — Halifax's night out.

Whether you first walked through those doors in 1965 or 2025, the Acapulco connects generations. Your mum danced here. Your nan probably did too.
