Norwood Green, Halifax — Village Greens, Old Stone Houses and Local History
Norwood Green is a historic village east of Halifax, known for its village green, traditional stone cottages and rural character. The settlement developed around its green and winding lanes, with farming, quarrying and domestic textile work helping to shape local life over the centuries.
One of the village’s notable historic buildings is Thorn Tree Farm, a stone farmhouse dating from around 1620. The Old White Beare Inn is another familiar landmark, reflecting the village’s long tradition of local gathering places. Nearby Rookes Hall and the woodland paths of Judy Woods add to the area’s rich historical landscape.
During the 18th and 19th centuries, Norwood Green remained closely connected to farming and the textile industry, while nearby Halifax expanded through industrial growth. Later housing development changed the surrounding countryside, but the village has retained much of its historic layout and distinctive character.
Today, Norwood Green remains known for its green, old stone buildings and strong community identity. The Jubilee Clock Tower, erected in 1897, is a prominent local landmark. Historic photographs of the green, Village Street and surrounding buildings provide a fascinating glimpse of the village in earlier generations.
