Old Sports

Let me tell you how it used to be round here.

Folk in Halifax have always loved their sport — football, cricket, whatever it was — and they played it for one reason only: pride. Not for money. Not for rewards. Just because it was your town, your team, and you’d die before letting the side down.

There was a footballer once — good enough to play anywhere — and they came with pockets full of gold to take him away. He told ’em straight:

"I play for the love of the game and the pride of my town. That’s worth more to me than all your brass."

And he stayed. Because respect matters more than wages. Always has done.

Then there was Bluecap. Tiny little hound — folk laughed when they saw him. But he ran like the wind. Beat every big fancy hound in the shire. And when he won, the whole town cheered him like he was royalty. They didn’t care he was small — they saw his heart. When he was too old to run, he lived like a king — fed on the best, and every man took his cap off as he went past.

Taught us all a lesson, that hound did: it’s not what you look like — it’s what’s inside that counts.

And do you know what else? In those days, money was tight. Most folk had hardly a penny to their name. But if you were in trouble — your neighbour helped. If you were hungry — they shared what was on the table. No questions asked. No talk of payment. That’s just how it was.

Things have changed now. Some folk have got plenty of brass — oh aye, plenty. But where’s the heart? Where’s the loyalty? Where’s the helping hand?

Money’s easier to come by — but the things that really matter? They’re harder to find.

Back then, we had nothing — and yet we had everything. We had pride. We had loyalty. We had neighbours who were friends. And let me tell you — that’s riches no banker can ever buy.
