Ainleys, Halifax
Ainleys, also known as Ainley Top or The Ainleys, is a small hilltop community between Elland and Huddersfield, close to the M62 motorway’s Junction 24. Set high above the surrounding valleys, it has long been an important crossing point between the two towns. Today, its landscape is dominated by major roads, bridges and the busy motorway junction, but beneath this modern transport network lies a much older history.
Coal mining was recorded in the area as far back as the twelfth century, and the surrounding countryside later became home to farms, small mines and roadside inns. During the 1770s, the turnpike road linking Huddersfield with Elland and Halifax was developed along a route associated with John Metcalf, better known as Blind Jack of Knaresborough. In the twentieth century, trams and trolleybuses negotiated the steep road, before the construction of the M62 transformed Ainley Top in the early 1970s. Today, Ainleys remains a distinctive gateway between Calderdale and Huddersfield, where traces of its rural past meet the demands of modern transport.
