1.0 Project Vision

The Cobbles Collection is an ongoing historical reconstruction of ordinary life in Halifax during the nineteenth century.

Its purpose is to combine rigorous historical research with carefully crafted storytelling, allowing readers to experience the town not through the lives of the wealthy or famous, but through the men, women and children whose names were rarely recorded.

The project is built upon a simple ambition:

To create the most authentic dramatised history of ordinary Halifax people ever written.

Every chapter is grounded in documented evidence wherever possible.

Every location is researched.

Every business, occupation and historical event is verified whenever evidence survives.

Where the historical record is silent, carefully researched fiction is used only to connect the facts and tell the human stories that history left behind.

The novel, the Hub and every companion page work together as a single collection.

Together they preserve not only the story of Cobbles, but also the history of the real Halifax that inspired it.

The Hub is the master editorial reference for the Cobbles historical saga. It records the people, places, events, historical research and story decisions that shape the world of Cobbles.

Unlike the novel itself, the Hub is not written as fiction. It exists to ensure historical accuracy, story continuity and consistency throughout every chapter, every future book and every supporting HalifaxPeople page.

Our guiding principle is simple:

Use documented fact wherever evidence exists.

Use carefully researched fiction only where the historical record is silent.

The Hub grows alongside the story and is updated only after each chapter has been:

• professionally edited,
• approved,
• and incorporated into the wider Cobbles Collection.

As the story expands, the Hub becomes both the editorial handbook for the novel and a permanent historical record of the real Halifax that inspired it.

The principal characters are fictional, but they live, work and interact within a world that is reconstructed from documented evidence wherever possible.

History remembers the wealthy.

History remembers the powerful.

History remembers those whose names appeared in books, newspapers and official records.

But most people left little behind.

No portraits.

No monuments.

Sometimes not even a gravestone.

Yet they built the mills, walked the cobbled streets, raised families, buried loved ones and shaped the Halifax we know today.

Cobbles is their story.

Many of the streets, buildings, businesses and events within these pages are real.

Many of the people genuinely lived.

Others have been created to represent the thousands of ordinary men, women and children whose lives passed without official recognition, but whose stories deserve to be told.

Every chapter is built upon careful research.

Every historical detail is questioned.

Every fictional scene is written with respect for the people who might once have lived it.

If, while reading these pages, you find yourself wondering whether something really happened, I hope you'll visit the Hub.

To maintain historical accuracy and consistency throughout The Cobbles Collection, every chapter follows the same editorial process.

No material becomes part of the official Cobbles canon until it has completed every stage.

Editorial Rule 001

Every suggested change must include:

• Page
• Section
• Action (Replace, Add, Delete or Move)
• Reason

No exceptions.

This ensures that every amendment can be traced, reviewed and incorporated consistently throughout the Hub and the wider Cobbles Collection.

Editorial Workflow

Every chapter follows the same sequence:

1. Historical research

Gather and verify documentary evidence.

2. First draft

Write the complete chapter before detailed editing begins.

3. Historical review

Check locations, occupations, chronology, geography, businesses, customs and historical references.

4. Literary editing

Improve structure, dialogue, pacing, character development, atmosphere and readability.

5. Chapter approval

Accept the chapter as the official narrative.

6. Hub update

Update characters, locations, timeline, references, research notes and continuity.

7. Collection update

Update supporting pages, companion articles, real events, galleries and reference material.

8. Publication

Only after all previous stages have been completed.

Editorial Principles
