Hipperholme, Calderdale — From Medieval Village to Victorian Day Trips

Hipperholme lies east of Halifax, on the historic route towards Brighouse and Leeds. Its roots stretch back to the Domesday survey of 1086, where the settlement is recorded under an early form of its name, commonly transcribed as “Huperun”. The older village centre grew around Towngate and Denholme Gate, where historic houses and cottages still hint at its earlier layout. The surrounding countryside supported farming, while domestic textile work, coal mining and ironworking contributed to the local economy over the centuries.

One of Hipperholme’s most enduring institutions is Hipperholme Grammar School. Its origins are associated with a school at Coley in the 16th century, and Matthew Broadley’s endowment helped establish the school on its present site. It opened there in 1661, and the main historic building was rebuilt in 1783. The stone building, with its central gable and bell turret, remains a notable landmark in the village.

Hipperholme changed significantly during the 19th century as industry and transport expanded. Mills, quarries and manufactories operated in the area, while the railway helped connect the village with Halifax and the wider region. Yet the district was also known for leisure. Sunny Vale Pleasure Gardens, opened in 1883 by Joseph Bunce, offered boating, concerts, a maze, dancing and other amusements. It attracted large crowds for decades, providing a popular day out before its decline after the Second World War. Calderdale Council’s local history account records the gardens’ attractions and eventual sale in 1945.

Today, Hipperholme is a busy residential and shopping area, but its older streets, school buildings and local records reveal a longer story: from a medieval settlement and textile-working community to a Victorian village connected by rail and known for its pleasure gardens.
