Ogden, Halifax: The Story of a Moorland Beauty Spot
From Halifax's first reservoir to a much-loved countryside retreat
A few miles north of Halifax, the small community of Ogden sits among the open moorland and rolling countryside of Calderdale. Best known today for Ogden Water, the area has a fascinating history combining industry, engineering and natural beauty.
Building Halifax's Water Supply
In the nineteenth century, Halifax's growing population and textile mills needed a dependable supply of water. Ogden Reservoir was built between 1854 and 1858 by Halifax Corporation, following the Halifax Act of 1853.
Designed by engineer John Frederick Bateman, the reservoir cost around £94,000 and was intended to hold more than 200 million gallons of water. It supplied the town and helped meet the demands of its busy mills.
The project was a major undertaking, transforming this quiet moorland valley into an important part of Halifax's water-supply system.
Little Switzerland
Ogden soon became popular with visitors attracted by its scenery. The surrounding countryside earned the affectionate nickname “Little Switzerland”, and people came to enjoy the fresh air and views.
In 1911, the quarry overlooking the reservoir was improved with benches and renamed Rock Hollow Park. Tea rooms later became part of the attraction, giving visitors somewhere to rest and enjoy refreshments. A former Primitive Methodist chapel nearby was also converted into tea rooms before eventually being demolished.
Ogden Water Today
In 1988, Ogden Reservoir became known as Ogden Water. Today, the reservoir and surrounding woodlands provide a popular destination for walkers, families and wildlife enthusiasts.
Woodland paths, waterside trails and open moorland offer opportunities to enjoy the countryside throughout the year. The area is also home to a variety of birds and other wildlife.
Ogden's story is a reminder that a place created to serve the needs of an industrial town can become one of its most treasured natural attractions.
From Victorian engineering to peaceful woodland walks, Ogden remains an important part of Halifax's heritage — a place where history and countryside come together.
