Abbey Park, Halifax

Abbey Park, in the Illingworth area of north Halifax, has a history shaped by post-war housing, changing communities and the regeneration of an established residential neighbourhood. The original estate was developed during the 1960s, providing homes for local families, but by the 1980s some of its flats had become vacant and fallen into disrepair. Over time, much of the original estate was demolished.

A new chapter began with the Valley Heights development, built on the former Abbey Park estate. Completed in 2022, the development brought new houses and bungalows to the area, including affordable rented homes and shared-ownership properties. Today, Abbey Park forms part of the wider Illingworth community, reflecting the continuing changes in the way people live in north Halifax.

Ogden, Halifax

Ogden is a small rural hamlet north of Halifax, surrounded by open moorland, rolling countryside and the distinctive landscape of the South Pennines. Best known for Ogden Water, the area has long been a favourite destination for people seeking fresh air, scenic views and peaceful walks away from the bustle of town.

Ogden’s history is closely linked to the growth of Halifax and its need for a reliable water supply. Ogden Reservoir was built by Halifax Corporation between 1854 and 1858, following the Halifax Act of 1853. It was the town corporation’s first reservoir, constructed at a cost of £94,000 and designed to hold around 200 million gallons of water. As well as supplying water, the reservoir soon became a popular beauty spot, earning the area the nickname “Little Switzerland”.

The surrounding countryside has other stories to tell, from old quarries and woodland paths to evidence of a Roman road discovered on Ogden Moor in 1963. Today, Ogden Water is a country park and local nature reserve, with woodland trails, waterside walks and views across the surrounding moors. It remains one of the much-loved countryside escapes on Halifax’s doorstep.
