🎩 Harry's Guide to Coley Village
Nestled on a hilltop northeast of Halifax, Coley is a peaceful village whose church tower stands as a landmark visible for miles around. This historic settlement's roots stretch back to 1277, when it first appeared in the Wakefield Court Rolls, marking the beginning of its documented history.
Originally part of the ancient parish of Halifax, Coley gained its own identity as an Ecclesiastical Parish in 1749. The village's rich heritage is centered around St. John the Baptist Church, known historically as the Chapel of Coleye, with records suggesting its existence as early as 1513. The church underwent significant expansions in 1596, 1631, and 1711, reflecting the village's growing importance.
Today, Coley maintains its character as a close-knit community, surrounded by the beautiful West Yorkshire countryside. The village takes pride in its heritage, from its medieval priory origins to its collection of ancient halls, including structures dating back to 1572.
