Bridge Tavern - Northgate, Halifax (opened in 1822 and closed in 1940)

BridgeTavern-Northgate

Positioned on the corner of 84 Northgate and Grove Street. This became the site of 'Dews Garage' near North Bridge.

Originally a Whittakers pub and became a Brear and Brown pub. It was closed in 1940 and was sold to the Halifax Corporation and the licence was transferred to the 'Exley Park' in Siddal.

The Bridge Tavern was straight opposite the 'Commercial' (the door on the right) on Northgate. At the bottom of the next street(Park Street) was another pub, the 'Travellers Rest' beerhouse which opened in 1879 and closed in 1922.

Dews-Northgate

The same plot became the site of Dews garage.

John.M.Thornton went on to run the Stannary Inn for six years before retiring in 1945.
